Cupcake Goodness!

We were planning to have dinner with my family and Andy's family, so it was sort of a special occasion. I planned to bake something new that I haven't tried. Then it hit me - what perfect way to celebrate the occasion with cupcakes? Upon realizing, I immediately went to the mall first thing in the morning and bought a cupcake pan. Yay! I was so excited!

It was also my first time to use a cupcake pan! My sister also gave me a red Betty Crocker heat-proof spatula! Yay! It perfectly matched my cupcakes!

Not only did I found out that red velvet cupcakes are just chocolate-vanilla flavored cakes, but I was also surprised that what makes the cupcakes red is just actually is just red food coloring. I always thought that red velvet cupcakes have secret ingredients that make the batter red (or am I just weird?) Anyway, I've researched a few facts and found out a few things about them: In the olden times, cocoa powder produced a red color when mixed to cake batters, thus the name red velvet. Since then, people have been imitating the same effect by adding red food coloring since cocoa powders nowadays do not produce that color anymore. Interesting history, right?

Red velvet cupcakes fresh from ze oven! I topped them with my whipped cream-butter frosting. And I tell you, whipped cream frosting is the best frosting for cupcakes!) I'd definitely make another of these soon. Let me know if you want the recipe in the comments section below :)
