20 Things To Do in Siargao, Philippines
When I came back from my Siargao trip, I received tons of inquiries asking me how we got there, places to stay, and things to do on the island. I decided to answer all your questions in this simple post.
So here is a list you can add to your itinerary if you're planning to visit the beautiful island of Siargao:
1. GO SURFING.
Because duh, you're obviously at the Surfing Capital of the Philippines. If you're a first timer and do not know how to swim (like me), there are beginner areas where the water is just up to your waist and the waves aren't that enormous. You only need to pay P500 to learn how to surf for an hour with a personal instructor. There are plenty of surf spots in the island, but the most famous one is Cloud 9.
2. GO ISLAND HOPPING.
..which is a must in Siargao. They'll take you to 3 islands called Naked, Daku, and Guyam. Pump boats can be rented starting from P1,500 to P2,500 depending on the number of passengers.
3. GET A TAN AT NAKED ISLAND.
And no, people are not naked there (well maybe partly, lol). The island is called such simply because it is naked - no coconut trees, plants, huts, nothing. It is merely a strip of white sand surrounded with pristine waters. So it's perfect to get a tan since there is no shade at all!
4. CHILL/PLAY SPORTS AT DAKU ISLAND.
It's named Daku (big) since it's the biggest among the three. It even has it's own barangay, and beach huts where, I believe, people can rent to stay over night. And since it is inhabited by a number of people, sports activities such as volleyball and basketball are available, so if you're up for a game, don't hesitate to play with the locals! Or, you may relax and chill at one of their beach huts.
5. TAKE LOTS OF PHOTOS OF/AT GUYAM ISLAND.
Guyam, which means small, is seriously my favorite island among the three. Just look at how photogenic and instagrammable it is! This is probably the most photographed island, too, since I've seen different shots of it - from drone shots, go pro shots, to selfies, you name it. It seems to be the perfect little island where people can get stranded like in movies, don't you think?
6. GO TO SOHOTON COVE, BUCAS GRANDE.
It's an hour and a half away from General Luna via pump boat. We got the chance to go swimming under the caves and see gorgeous views!
7. GO TO MAGPUPUNGKO ROCK POOLS
When the tide is low, rent motorbikes or a van and head out to Magpupungko Rock Pools, which means "rocks sitting on top of each other", if I'm not mistaken. This is 45-minutes away from General Luna, Siargao. I seriously suggest you include this in your itinerary. I mean, where else can you find crystal clear waters like this??
8. STAY IN BUDGET-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATIONS
Almost all resorts are lined up in the General Luna strip and there are a lot of which you can choose from. My friends and I stayed at a 2-story bungalow/cottage at Villa Solaria (which is very close to Cloud 9), and I highly recommend you guys stay there if you're on a budget with your friends. The Dutch owner is very welcoming and friendly, as most of the locals are. I booked our room at Travelbook.ph, and our room costs P6,000.00 for 2 nights. There were 6 of us in the room, so we basically spent P500 each per night - not bad!!).
9. BUT ALSO TRY STAYING IN A LUXURY RESORT
We decided to splurge on our last few days on the island and stayed at Siargao Bleu Resort and Spa to finally relax and get the R&R that we much needed. Seriously, it's the best resort in Siargao!!! They have two types of rooms: The Floating Villas (beside the pool, the ones you see here in the pictures) which cost Php12,000.00 per night and the Terrace/Garden Rooms at Php 6,500.00 per night (prices are inclusive of tax and many complimentary items). Everything was worth it though, and picture-perfect! They even have a unicorn floatie for the guests to use in the pool.
10. TRY THE HEALTHY POWER BOWLS AT SHAKA
Seriously, they don't taste so "healthy" at all because they're so goood! They also sell vegan stuff and healthy smoothies - just what you need to get enough energy to go surfing and maintain that bikini body!
11. EAT AT KERMIT SURF AND DIVE RESORT
This is one of the highly recommended restaurants to try out in the island. Food here is so delicious!!! Their restaurant is always packed, so you need to get a reservation before you head there for lunch/dinner. We were lucky to be accommodated when we arrived even though all tables were reserved already. They seriously have the best pizza! And you can choose your own toppings, too!
12. GRAB SOME COFFEE OR FRESH JUICES AT CAFE LOKA
...which is just beside Cloud 9, so it's a perfect spot to chill and refresh after surfing under the blazing sun!
13. RENT MOTORCYCLES
The only means of transportation in Siargao are habal-habals (with rooftops!) and motorcycles. There are vans (but for airport transfers only) and jeepneys, but they are quite hard to find. It's best to rent motorcycles which cost P350 for 24 hours and explore the island on your own!
14. WATCH THE SUNSET IN CLOUD 9.
We did't go there at sunset though, but I heard the place looks magical at golden hour.
15. COOK YOUR OWN FOOD.
Head out to their market and buy fresh seafood and grill them on your own during your island-hopping activity, or just at your resort. If you can't grill them, the locals at the market would be glad to cook them for you for a small fee.
16. BRING A TRIPOD AND SHOOT YOUR OWN PHOTOS
The island is just perfect for summer ootds, bikini shots, backdrop, etc. Try experimenting on your own and shoot at different angles without the help of your friends or blogger jowa.
17. ENJOY THE ISLAND'S COLORFUL TROPICAL VIBE
This island seriously has that laid-back provincial and tropical feels that will make you want to stay there forever. Seriously!!! I definitely won't hesitate on coming back!
18. INTERACT WITH THE LOCALS
...because they are just very friendly, accommodating, and even funny!
19. DISCONNECT FROM THE ONLINE WORLD AND HAVE FUN WITH YOUR FRIENDS.
When you're there, it's not the time to scroll through Facebook or Instagram. Uploading pictures can wait. Do as much as you can - play table tennis, or rent bicycles (at only Php200 per day).
20. Last but not the least, POSE AND TAKE A WHOLE LOT OF PHOTOS.
With an island so beautiful like Siargao, how can you not?!
I'm sure there are many other places you can visit and things you can do on the island, but these are just some of the things that I have experienced. I will definitely be back to explore more!
